+ GordonĀ“s Wine Bar

Let’s inaugurate the list with a proper classic: Gordon’s Wine Bar.Gordon's Wine Bar London

The place is an attraction on its own and actually resembles a cave. It is humid and full of traditional British memorabilia, lots of photos of kings, queens and Churchill. True LondonersĀ® are brought here by their grandfathers at young age as guarantee and proof that there will always be somebody taking care of their debts, thus introducing its own kin to a noble tradition of leaving the account open. A tradition spanning generations.

The list of wines is quite big, but very pocket friendly. Still, if you are on the affluent side of life, they also have some pretty old vintages protected, wisely, from light and greedy eyes in their cellars.

Another plus of this place is that you can really trust the bartender. Just tell him what you want and what is your budget.

Some general considerations

Some say that men came out of the cave because of wine, mostly and largely due to its positive effects in opening our minds. In short, it is safe to say, that the development of any civilization is based on its success in providing high quality alcohol to its population.

Wine is meant to be enjoyed and improve social relationships. But good wine in London is, like everything else except rain and “craft” beer, rare and expensive. It is a norm for most places to extort you when serving you wine, but what makes the experience really outrageous, is the quality of whatever kind of monkey piss they serve you. Sadly, very few complain or give the cup back. Probably thinking that they just lack wine “understanding”.

Well, there are two good things about this. Firstly, this city is famous for its wine merchants and traders, consequently there are places that don’t consider you an absolute idiot and sell excellent varieties for a fair price. Secondly, you don’t have to mortgage yourself or be an expert to have and appreciate a good wine.

Wine tasting is actually an association game without rules, you just have to play with your memories. It is a subjective act. But if the first thing you notice is vinegar – then that’s what it is, evolution protects.

As in this site we really drink a lot and love London, before leaving into oblivion and to the stars, we want to share our experience of where to go and where not to, this is a public service.
